ASC Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Kent Sasse of the International Metabolic Institute

Kent Sasse, MD, founder of the International Metabolic Institute, is pushing for change. In his blog, The Sasse Guide, he says Americans are caught in a culture of laziness, overeating, and inactivity — and, through their children, creating a generation of overweight citizens.

He said in April, “It definitely requires a much more active battle plan to prevent our children from becoming overweight and obese [than it did thirty years ago]. It’s not just going to happen automatically.”

Over the last 30 years, he said, our environment has become more focused on consuming high-calorie foods and less focused on getting outside and exercising. He said the only solution is that parents must “take a tougher line.” He recommends eliminating sugary beverages, turning junk food into an occasional treat instead of a regular meal and encouraging children to get regular exercise. It isn’t easy, he said, just necessary.

Dr. Sasse founded the International Metabolic Institute to help individuals change their lifestyles and lose excess weight. He also founded Western Bariatric Institute, a surgical weight loss center, and ASBS Center of Excellence. He has written various research protocols and lectures, as well as several books, including Weight-Loss Surgery: Which One is Right for You? and Life-Changing Weight Loss. He regularly updates his blog with tips for losing weight, encouraging patients to use a pedometer, fight hunger with a cup of tea or organize a supper club instead of dining out.

Dr. Sasse received his MD at the University of California San Francisco and earned two master’s degrees from the University of California Berkeley. He completed his residency training in surgery at the University of California San Francisco, where he focused on gastrointestinal surgery and physiology. He later moved to northern Nevada to develop his bariatric practice.
