Mr. Voithofer is responsible for operations, client support and growth of the AHS anesthesia, pain management, and surgery center division. Having managed anesthesia, radiology and pathology practices nationally, he has extensive knowledge of the nuances of hospital-based physician billing and surgery center billing.

Prior to joining AHS, Mr. Voithofer worked in sales, client management, consulting and operational roles at several firms in the medical billing and payor industries. He began his career at Capital Blue Cross in Pennsylvania and earned his bachelor’s degree in health policy and administration from Penn State University.

Mr. Voithofer discussed possible reasons for surgery center claim denials in an interview with Becker’s ASC Review. Missing information on the claim is one of the most common explanations according to published reports by the health insurance industry, he said. Payors that receive claims with incomplete information will typically reject them automatically, he said, which is why surgery center staff must be trained to catch omissions. “Studies show that if you had that information on the claim upfront, the vast majority of those claims would not be denied,” Mr. Voithofer said. Missing information could include the group tax ID number and the group address and constitutes the most common cause of “administrative denials.” Administrative denials, for the most part, are self-inflicted issues which should be avoided, he said.
