Marcy Sasso, director of operations for the Ambulatory Surgery Center of Union County (N.J.), expressed her concerns over the future of ASCs in New Jersey in a letter to the editor published in the Suburban News.

In the letter, Ms. Sasso described the difficulties for ASCs as a result of the “new slashed PIP fee schedule to the Blue Cross/Blue Shield new ‘advantage plan,'” which caps patients at $2,000 per surgery per calendar year. In her opinion, Ms. Sasso believes that insurance plans that make these regulations force patients to choose in-network providers, limiting patients’ choice when it comes to healthcare.

Additionally, Ms. Sasso fears that ASCs who lose business because they are out-of-network will close, adding to unemployment rates and placing extra burden on local hospitals in New Jersey. She also notes New Jersey’s two-year moratorium on surgery centers, which further limits the options for physicians and staff who would potentially be laid off by these new regulations.

Ms. Sasso proposes the creation of an ASC fee schedule for New Jersey in the letter and asks for assistance from other people and groups in the state to help give state legislators a fuller picture of the ASC story.
