The Laser Spine Institute recently added minimally invasive fusions and a disc regeneration treatment to its ASC procedure offerings.

Determine the demand for a new procedure by analyzing patient interest and working with your surgeons. If you allow your surgeons to innovate and bring new technology to the center, you will attract pioneers in the field to your center.

“Patient satisfaction sometimes has to be the driving factor, not just profitability,” Dr. Prada said.

Work with a facility and reputable surgeon already performing the procedure to learn more about implementation. Bring along members of you ASC staff, including your infection control officer, supply officer and other leaders. Unless you are at a competing location, the surgeon and staff should be proud to share with you how they implemented the new procedure, and you can develop a lasting relationship.

Determine the return on the investment and make a financial plan based on the reimbursement rates and your current payor contracts. Set up meetings with payors to discuss coverage and what medical necessity is required to get your center paid.

Make sure all staff members and surgeons are properly trained in the new procedure, as well as the infection prevention and equipment compliance. This may even include establishing a fellowship training for your procedure.

Overall, don’t lose sight of the big picture, Dr. Prada said. Reinforce the team mentality and start slowly before fully incorporating new procedures. Also work to manage your patients’ expectations and update your informed consent.
