APNs, PAs now may prescribe controlled substances in Illinois

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Responsibility has adopted amendments to regulations governing the state’s controlled substance licensees, according to a Lexology report.

Amongst the amendments is a change for mid-level practitioners and temporary medical license holders.

Advanced practice nurses and physician assistants who have clinical privileges at an ambulatory surgery center, hospital or hospital affiliate now may be licensed to prescribe controlled substances, according to the report. To do so, APNs and PAs need to meet all education conditions included in the Illinois Controlled Substances Act.
