Anesthesiologist-led care model shows successful outcomes in outpatient gallbladder surgery patients: 4 study insights

Two studies, presented at the ASA’s ANESTHESIOLOGY 2015 annual meeting, show that outpatient gallbladder surgeries coordinated by anesthesiologists through the perioperative surgical home model resulted in improved outcomes for patients, according to a News-Medical report.

Here are four insights:

1. Researchers reviewed four years of data on 1,784 patients undergoing laparoscopic gallbladder surgery.

2. Half of the patients received their care through an existing provider-centered surgical process that focused on speeding up the perioperative process, while the other half received care through the new perioperative surgical home model.

3. Patients who received their care through the PSH model experienced a 38-minute decrease in wait times before surgery as well as a 79-minute reduction in recovery time.

4. Additionally, PSH patients were 17 times less likely to face complications after surgery. Only four patients required additional care as compared to 61 patients in the provider-centered group.
