The company initiative a Class 1 recall of the system in 2012 after reports of serious injury, but facilities were able to continue using the system after implementing the pre-use checklist and training program. AmkaiSolutions developed a check list program to fit within its electronic medical record system within days of receiving requests from their partners.
“A number of our partners wanted to continue using the Neptune system, but didn’t want their circulators to do an electronic chart and then have to maintain a paper record,” said Thomas Pinelli, SVP Product Management for AmkaiCharts, the AmkaiSolutions EMR system, in a company report. “One of the pre-use checklist items specified that if you have an EMR, you can make the checklist electronic. Our partners wanted to know if we could build this pre-use checklist into the electronic chart and have the software automatically prompt the circulator to fill out the checklist so they don’t forget about it. That prompt would essentially become a mandatory field every time Stryker Neptune was selected as equipment for use in the operating room.”
