Here are three things to know about the updates:
1. While the AMA Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs is in the final stages of updating the Code, AMA members can review chapters and comment on a public forum where their thoughts are visible to other AMA members. Physicians can also review chapters for continuing medical education, but their suggestions aren’t made public.
2. The Code was last updated 50 years ago and now the Council is reviewing for relevance, timeliness, clarity and consistency. The Council will incorporate feedback into the new Code, but only change what is necessary. The original code was released in 1847.
3. Susan Dorr Goold, MD, is the council chair and reported on progress during the AMA’s interim meeting last November. “We are looking for extensive feedback. The Code is yours…Your feedback is vital to this work,” said Dr. Goold at the meeting.
