Meanwhile, Cecil B. Wilson, MD, an internist from Winter Park, Fla., was inaugurated president, succeeding J. James Rohack, MD, in the top post. As president-elect, Dr. Carmel will assume the presidency a year from now.
In his inaugural address, Dr. Wilson outlined four leading challenges for healthcare: Medicare physician reimbursement, inefficiencies in healthcare delivery, medical liability concerns and rising healthcare costs. Dr. Wilson earned his MD from Emory University, completed his residency at the U.S. Navy Hospital in Portsmouth, Va., and then served as a Navy flight surgeon.
Dr. Carmel has served on the AMA board since 2002 and has held several top positions in the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
Dr. Carmel earned his MD from New York University School of Medicine, completed his residency at the Neurological Institute of New York and obtained his doctorate in neuroanatomy from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
