In a suit filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Alcon is seeking an injunction against and damages resulting from Synergetics’ “unauthorized manufacture, use, sale, offer to sell and/or importation into the United States for subsequent use or sale of systems and/or products that infringe” on a patent for a laser delivery system for ophthalmic surgery that uses laser probes with soft tips. Alcon says it filed suit after Synergetics abruptly broke off licensing discussions earlier this year.
Compatible with Alcon vision systems such as the Purepoint Laser, the laser probes’ soft tips are intended to minimize damage to the retina during vitreoretinal surgical procedures.
