Ms. Sebelius visited Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, to recognize the initiative, called Solutions for Patient Safety, and help spread its program through the National Quality Strategy, a set of national guidelines for improving patient safety.
Solutions for Patient Safety has achieved success by focusing on hand hygiene and cleaning catheters’ access points. The program has saved about $13 million, reduced patient days in the hospital by more than 900 and produced 3,600 fewer adverse drug events and infections in children since its inception in 2009.
Solutions for Patient Safety is a collaboration between Cardinal Health Foundation, Ohio Business Roundtable, Central Ohio Hospital Council, Ohio Hospital Association, Ohio Children’s Hospital Association and 25 Ohio hospitals.
Ohio’s eight children’s hospitals will expand this patient safety program through a Serious Safety Events initiative and by developing a patient harm index.
