The procedure, called Focused Aspiration of Soft Tissue, is performed using an ultrasound to find the precise location of soft tissue damage in the patietn’s joint. The area is them sterilized and numbed with lidocaine. The physician inserts the probe into the patient’s joint and engages the energy button to break up and suck out bad tissue. According to the report, the procedure takes about two minutes to perform.

Dr. Stahle is one of about 10 local physicians using the procedure, which was developed at the Mayo Clinic. Health insurance covers the FAST procedure, but not platelet rich plasma therapy, another method to treat damaged tissue.
