1. The insurance companies lost hundreds of millions of dollars because of the higher-than-anticipated amount of claims from coverages provided through the Affordable Care Act.
2. The Forbes’ article reports that it’s unclear whether these reinsurance laws could be instituted before insurance companies begin leaving exchanges.
3. Humana said this month it will scale back its expansion to no more than 156 counties to the more than 1,350 it expanded to this year. Aetna called off all expansion plans for 2017, and it is also reviewing whether it will continue to participate in the 15 states it currently sells coverage in. UnitedHealth Group said it will only sell on exchanges in three states next year.
4. Industry analysts said it would be a good move to have reinsurance be a part of the long-term future of the ACA, similar to health plans under Medicare Part D.
