Outpatient facilities add 900 jobs in April.
Outpatient facilities, including ambulatory surgery centers, added 900 jobs of 19,000 seasonally adjusted healthcare sector jobs added in April. Overall, ambulatory service facilities were responsible for 13,600 added jobs, but mostly in physician offices and health services.
Only 12 physician medical group M&A deals in 2013 Q1.
Physician medical group merger and acquisition deals are down 37 percent from the fourth quarter of 2012 with only 12 deals completed in the first quarter of 2013. During the first quarter of 2012, there were 43 percent more deals with physician medical groups.
Small & mid-sized M&A market to grow in 2013.
A KPMG report found that 60 percent of polled healthcare executives intend to work on more deals this year than they in 2012. The small to mid-sized market, deals valued at $250 million or less, will likely see a surge due to easier financing and integration.
Structural changes, efficiency could keep healthcare spending growth rate low.
A Harvard study found that the lower healthcare spending growth trend actually began before the recession. The study suggested if patient cost-sharing, higher efficiency and reduced imaging technology and drug development continued healthcare spending over the next 10 years could be $770 billion less than predicted.
436 Beverly Hills Surgery Center merges with La Peer Health Systems.
Beverly Hills, Calif.-based outpatient surgery center La Peer Health Systems has announced a merger with 436 Beverly Hill Surgery Center.
McKenzie Surgery Center appoints Dr. Grant Rusin medical director.
McKenzie Surgery Center, a Surgical Care Affiliates partner based in Eugene, Ore., has appointed Grant Rusin, MD, as its new medical director. Dr. Rusin has previous experience serving as medical director of a freestanding outpatient surgery center.
Number of physicians increases in 30 states since 2010.
Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida have seen a 10.4 percent increase in physicians numbers between 2010 and 2012. Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana have seen a 9.3 percent increase. Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii and Alaska have seen a 9 percent increase. Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio have seen a 1.9 percent increase. Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico have seen a 0.1 percent increase.
