Researchers examined trends in sharps injuries among healthcare workers at 76 acute-care hospitals in Massachusetts. Their analysis showed during the 2002-2007 study period, the annual sharps injury rate fell by 22 percent, at an annual decline of 4.7 percent. Sharps injuries fell most dramatically among nurses but not as significantly among physicians.
Researchers also found sharps injuries stemming from winged steel needles and hypodermics needles and syringes fell as companies developed devices with sharps injury prevention features in the study period.
