The study details four best practices for containing OR supply costs. Staff members appointed to materials management should compare the cost of reusable and disposable products; evaluate the many options for implants to appropriately select the most cost-effective choice; review and analyze the cost of each custom pack compared with the cost of enriched standard packs; and review linen use.
The study also suggests several practice changes. These practice changes support the idea that OR products should only be introduced into clinical settings based on the added value they bring to patients. For example, researchers suggest eliminating preoperative shave kits and razors for surgical preps to save money and decrease surgical site infections.
