For the study, researchers administered IAP to mice on antibiotics and discovered a 10-fold increase in C. difficile bacteria in the mice’s stool and a 10-fold decrease in IL-1, an inflammatory marker. Previous researcher has shown IAP, a naturally occurring enzyme in humans, had no negative side effects in humans.
Researchers hope to start clinical trials with human participants soon.
