Researchers surveyed acute-care facilities in Florida on antimicrobial stewardship programs. Seventy-three facilities identified the following perceptions as important or very important reasons for antimicrobial misuse, according to the study:

• Lack of awareness and knowledge about antimicrobials and infections
• Lack of buy-in to problems associated with the overuse of antimicrobials
• Clinicians’ fear of being sued for untreated infections
• Misconception that antibiotics should be used every time a patient experiences a fever
• Patient satisfaction
