4 statistics on rising healthcare costs

Consumers are continuing to feel the pressure of rising healthcare costs. In 2014, consumers’ ability to pay for select medical procedures dropped by more than 11 percent, according to TransUnion’s latest Healthcare Report. Here are four statistics on rising healthcare costs.

•    Patient deductibles costs rose 7 percent from $1,062 in the fourth quarter of 2013 to $1,133 in the fourth quarter of 2014.
•    Average patient payment costs increased 11 percent from $2,245 in the fourth quarter of 2013 to $2,491 in the fourth quarter of 2014.
•    The cost of joint replacement procedures rose almost 20 percent from $2,617 in the fourth quarter of 2013 to $3,135 in the fourth quarter of 2014.
•    80 percent of survey respondents said that pre-treatment cost estimates would be “helpful” or “extremely helpful,” but only 25 percent reported actually receiving this information.
