At least nine physicians on staff at larger Montana hospitals earned more than $700,000 in 2010, including a cancer specialist at St. Peter’s Community Hospital in Helena ($1.33 million) and a dermatological surgeon at Billings Clinic ($1.12 million).
Hospitals officials said they must pay top salaries to recruit physicians for in-demand specialties such as cancer treatment and cardiology. “Our goal is to meet the needs of the community, and physician salaries may be higher where we have recruitment challenges,” said Stacy Rogge, a spokeswoman for St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula.
