Several factors contribute to the risk of retained foreign objects during robotic surgery, including improper or inefficient team coordination and workflow. To eliminate this risk, the PSO has detailed three strategies:
1. Conduct a simulated robotically assisted procedure so surgical teams can learn how to adjust workflows around the new technology while maintaining safe surgery practices.
2. Adopt adjunct tools or technology, such as imaging or radiofrequency tagging.
3. Maintain a culture of patient safety and ensure all channels of communication are open to reduce the risk of retained foreign objects.
