The hospital is utilizing the I-PASS protocol developed at Boston Children’s Hospital. The I-PASS acronym includes all the critical elements that should be communicated between clinicians:
• I: Illness severity
• P: Patient summary
• A: Action list
• S: Situation awareness and contingency planning
• S: Synthesis by receiver
Preliminary data collection shows residents at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital are spending more time with children. Eight other healthcare organizations are implementing and studying the impact of the I-PASS protocol. Total data collection is expected to be complete in 2013.
