3 Dressing Options for Debridement in Wound Care

There are several options for debridement — the removal of dead or damaged skin — when healing wounds, according to a Medline Industries blog post.

When treating wounds, providers must first complete a skin and wound assessment, conduct a comprehensive assessment of the patient and address the patient’s pain. If the wound is treatable, the blood supply is adequate and there are no critical cofactors that would prevent wound repair, providers should perform debridement to allow healthy tissue to grow.

Here are three dressing options for debridement described in the blog post:

1. Saline dressings. A wet-to-dry gauze dressing using normal saline is an example of mechanical debridement.
2. Topical enzymatic therapy. Topical enzymatic therapy is a selective method of debridement, and the only enzyme available in the United States is collagenase.
3. Medical grade honey. Medical grade honey dressings are also for selective debridement.
