This list uses May 2022 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and 2022 data from the Census Bureau. It excludes anesthesiologists, cardiologists, dermatologists, emergency medicine physicians, family medicine physicians, general internal medicine physicians, neurologists, obstetricians and gynecologists, and pathologists.

Here are the 10 states with the fewest physicians per 100,000 residents:

1. South Dakota: 20.9

2. Alaska: 25.9

3. Montana: 28.5

4. North Dakota: 59

5. Wyoming: 61.9

6. Vermont: 66.5

7. Maine: 86.6

8. New Hampshire: 88.2

9. Delaware: 110

10. District of Columbia: 159.3
