UPS launched a field inventory tracking platform in collaboration with WebOps and Baxter Planning to optimize delivery of surgical kits and implantable devices.

Baxter Planning is an inventory planning and optimization solutions provider, and WebOps is a medical device logistics and analytics technology provider.

Here are five insights.

1. Through its network of healthcare field stocking locations and distribution centers and the platforms' cloud-based capabilities, UPS aims to deliver critical shipments to 80 percent of hospitals and ASCs within four hours.

2. The software will allow medical device manufacturers to reduce inventory by 20 to 50 percent and reduce expedited order requests by 10 to 30 percent, UPS said.

3. The WebOps application features precise tracking of surgery schedules, physician preferences, inventory availability and surgical kits and implants movement. It also enables communication about implant usage, product needs and consumption.

4. Baxter Planning's platform will provide users with streamlined inventory planning for the consigned inventory across hospitals and forward stocking locations.

5. The combined technology solution is intended to help manufacturers maintain product integrity, decrease inventory, improve sales force and customer service effectiveness, enhance field resource and asset utilization and comply with increasing patient safety requirements.
