Researchers: Up to 1K patients harmed by cybersecurity attacks on medical devices

Some executives believe up to 1,000 patients endured harm from medical device breaches, researchers at UCSan Diego found.

Here are five insights, as reported by Fierce Healthcare:

1. The researchers surveyed 40 executives from some of the largest medical device vendors and provider organizations.

2. Two of the executives said 100 to 1,000 patients were harmed during an unreported adverse event associated with a medical device cybersecurity attack.

3. Twenty percent of respondents didn't implement new policies based on the FDA's pre- and post-market cybersecurity guidance. The guidance includes regulations for meeting mandatory quality system regulations.

4. Twenty percent don't plan to implement new policies.

5. Eighty percent of respondents said cybersecurity risks surpass the media's perception. There have been no reported instances of patient harm in connection to an attack, partially because it's challenging to identify a direct tie.
