Physicians view FDA drug approval process, pharmaceutical process favorably — 5 insights

A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine presented physician's thoughts on the FDA's drug review process.

Researchers surveyed 686 respondents about their thoughts on the FDA and pharmaceuticals in general.

What you should know:

1. Eighty percent of physicians viewed the FDA's drug approval regulations' positively.

2. Seventy-eight percent of physicians preferred drugs be tested in two prospective randomized trials instead of only one.

3. Sixty-five percent were satisfied with how many drug applications the FDA approved. Twenty-four percent said the bar to get a new drug approved was "too high" and three percent said the bar was "much too high."

4. Sixty percent of physicians said the FDA were against off-label promotion to physicians. Sixty-one percent of physicians said such promotion would likely increase the number of prescriptions for drugs with meaningless benefits.

5. Concerning pricing, 54 percent said manufacturers charged an accurate amount for drugs used off-label. Seventy percent supported differentiating pricing on whether FDA approval was based on surrogate or patient outcomes.
