Joint Implant Surgeons tests Zimmer Biomet's Apple Watch app — 5 insights

One of the Midwest's largest orthopedic surgery centers is enrolled in a clinical study testing Zimmer Biomet's physical therapy app, according to Columbus CEO.

What you should know:

1. Joint Implant Surgeons in New Albany (Ohio) is enrolled in the clinical study's first phase, which will assess the usability and mechanical features of Zimmer Biomet's Mymobility app. The technology is designed to prepare patients for joint replacement surgery and guide their rehabilitation.

2. Joint Implant Surgeons could enroll up to 1,000 patients in the study. Knee and hip replacement candidates who have an iPhone 6 or later versions are eligible to participate.

3. Patients enrolled receive an Apple Watch to be worn for one year and paired with Zimmer's Mymobility app, which automatically sends data to the surgeon's dashboard.

4. Surgeons and healthcare team members can send patients therapy and education reminders through the app. Mymobility also collects preoperative and postoperative data, such as heart rate, walking patterns and physical ability. This information could help physicians personalize treatment and rehabilitation plans.

5. Nine U.S. practices are enrolled in the study, which could involve up to 10,000 participants. The next phase of the study will compare outcomes using the app versus traditional physical therapy.
