Health and medical apps in ample supply as demand dies down: 8 things to know

A new study in Research 2 Guidance, says the market for health and medical apps may have peaked as download numbers are beginning to drop, MobiHealthNews reports.

Here's what you need to know.

1. On the major app stores there are 259,000 apps related to either health or medicine.

2. Of the 259,000 apps, only a portion of the creators have been able to create a profitable app. A large majority of publishers, 78 percent, make less than $100,000 a year, and 60 percent make less than $1,000 per month.

3. In the last year alone, nearly 100,000 health or medicine apps were added to various app stores.

4. The apps are being published by 58,000 different developers with 13,000 being new to the market in 2015.

5. Since Apple introduced HealthKit it has become the most widely used Application Programming Interface.

6. Apple and Android have about an equal market share, with 75 percent of all health apps being developed for both platforms.

7. Licensing technology and third party development services are the primary ways health apps make money.

8. The market is still expected to grow to $31 billion by 2020.
