Google, Johnson & Johnson expanding surgical robots venture — 4 insights

Google and Johnson & Johnson are relocating and expanding their joint venture surgical robotics company, Verb Surgical, Mercury News reports.

1. Verb Surgical signed a lease for a 234,000-square-foot office building in Santa Clara, Calif., the week of June 14, sources told Mercury News.

2. Johnson & Johnson and Verily Life Sciences — formerly Google Life Sciences — formed Verb Surgical in 2015. It was originally located in Mountain View, Calif., near the Googleplex headquarters.

3. The company aims to combine robotics, software, machine learning and other technologies to improve surgery procedures and outcomes.

4. Verb Surgical executives and representatives did not provide any comment on the lease to Mercury News.

"We believe Verb Surgical has the potential to change the future of surgery, not just robotic surgery," Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Worldwide Chairman Gary Pruden said when Verb Surgical's formation was announced.
