Former physician receives 75-month sentence for illegally prescribing opioids, committing fraud — 7 insights

Former physician Rodney Moret, was sentenced to 75 months, a little over six years, in prison for distributing prescription pills illegally and defrauding Medicare.

Here’s what you should know:

1. He prescribed more than $15 million in prescription drugs and committed an additional $6 million in healthcare fraud.

2. Mr. Moret pled guilty to a count of conspiring to illegally distribute prescription drugs and one count of healthcare fraud.

3. The offenses happened while Mr. Moret was the only physician at Southfield, Mich.-based Advance Care Services.

4. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Mr. Moret’s practice was operating solely as a pill mill. Mr. Moret operated his practice by using patient marketers to obtain medically unnecessary controlled substances. Medicare was billed for improperly conducted procedures and/or procedures that were not conducted, and then the opioids were illegally sold.

5. The clinic operated between 2010 and 2015. A co-defendant in the case claimed Mr. Moret “took advantage of the female ‘patients’ who were at the clinic to receive controlled substance prescriptions by sexually molesting or harassing them.”

6. The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs revoked Mr. Moret’s license in March 2017.

7. Mr. Moret was one of five defendants in the case. All defendants pled guilty.
