FDA approves opioid 10x stronger than fentanyl as crisis continues — 5 insights

The FDA approved the painkiller Dsuvia Nov. 2, USA Today reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. The painkiller will be restricted to use in hospitals, surgery centers and emergency rooms. It won't be available at retail pharmacies or for home use.

2. The opioid tablet is 1,000 times stronger than morphine and 10 times more potent than fentanyl.

3. Critics say the drug is likely to be abused, contributing to the opioid epidemic.

4. Dsuvia will be subject to "very tight restrictions," and military use of the drug factored into the FDA's approval, according to FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD.

5. The medication comes in the form of a dissolvable tablet that shouldn't be used for more than 72 hours.
