Five details:
1. Precisive Surgical, a spine imaging system provider, spun off from the life science technology incubator IntuitiveX. Terms of the merger weren’t disclosed.
2. Carlsmed’s new platform will facilitate earlier surgical intervention with personalized implant devices for complex, multilevel spinal alignment deviation.
3. The system will leverage imaging for severe spinal deformities — which has historically been used solely for diagnostic purposes — to inform surgical intervention.
4. The system will integrate bioengineering and biomedical technology to decrease intraoperative device fitting trial-and-error, lower postoperative complications, and reduce surgical costs for patients, surgeons, hospitals and surgery centers.
5. Additionally, Carlsmed appointed Jeffrey Roh, MD, to serve on its board of directors alongside co-founders Mike Cordonnier, Niall Casey and Justin Esterberg, MD. Dr. Roh is a spine surgeon and CEO of IntuitiveX.
“In surgery, we have access to enormous amounts of imaging data preoperatively or intraoperatively that is not currently being harnessed to its fullest extent to improve patient outcomes,” said spine surgeon Dr. Esterberg, co-founder and chief medical officer at Precisive Surgical. “The system we’re creating will allow us to truly capture this data for each patient and optimize implant dimensions and trajectories for spinal cages and instrumentation to enhance patient outcomes following surgery.”
