Texas Rheumatologist Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Fraud, Must Forfeit $43M in Cash

Arun Sharma, MD, a rheumatologist from Kemah, Texas, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and ordered to forfeit more than $43 million in cash and property after a guilty plea to committing healthcare fraud, according to a Houston Chronicle news report.

Dr. Sharma admitted to filing fraudulent claims to Medicare, Medicaid and other private healthcare payors for medical procedures that were never rendered over a 10-year span. His wife Kiran Sharma, MD, also pleaded guilty to healthcare fraud and will be sentenced later this month, according to the report.
