Texas Physician Accused of Distributing Controlled Substances Through Clinic Employee

A physician who formerly practiced at Gulf Coast Medical Clinic in Port Arthur, Texas, has been indicted for federal healthcare fraud violations, according to a Beaumont Enterprise report.

According to the charges, Herbert M. Emejulu, MD, allegedly submitted more than $176,000 in false claims to Medicare and Medicaid to obtain payments for services that he did not provide. His employee, Chukwudi Ibezim, allegedly falsely identified himself as "Dr. Chuck" to patients and the medical clinic. The suit claims the two worked together to distribute prescription drug orders for controlled substances such as oxycodone, hydromorphone and morphine.

If convicted, the two men face up to 10 years in federal prison for each charge and up to 20 years in prison for each drug distribution charge.
