The new law aims to clamp down on kickbacks, a process by which providers give out cash or material goods to Medicaid patients to encourage those patients to use services that are medically unnecessary. Providers then bill Medicaid for those services.

The new anti-kickback law includes a series of initiatives, including stronger investigation and prosecution of potential abusers, new Medicaid SWAT teams, better use of technology to detect and prevent abuse and a campaign to encourage the public and providers to report suspected abuse.

The state expects to save million of dollars with the new law.
