Michigan Medical Assistant Sentenced to 46 Months in Prison for Filing $2.8M in False Claims to Medicare

Mohammed El-Fallal, a medical assistant employed by two home health agencies in Oak Park, Mich., has been sentenced to 46 months in prison and ordered to pay $2.8 million in restitution for his role in a healthcare fraud scheme, according to a Cypress Times news report.

Mr. El-Fallal pleaded guilty in June to his role in a scheme that bilked approximately $2.8 million from Medicare. In order to be eligible for reimbursements from Medicare for home health services, the home health agency must have a physician's order for all services rendered. Mr. El-Fallal, an unlicensed physician, admitted to conspiring with the owner and operator of the home health agencies he worked for to bill Medicare for physical and occupational therapy services by signing physician's orders using the identity of a mentally ill physician.

His employer and owner of the home health agencies, Muhammad Shahab, paid Mr. El-Fallal $100 for each therapy order he signed.
