Michigan Family Practitioner Sentenced to Two Years' Prison Time for Healthcare Fraud

A family practitioner from Dearborn, Mich., has been sentenced to two years in prison for committing Medicare fraud and other crimes, according to a Department of Justice news release.

Ali S. Makki, MD, pleaded guilty in July of submitting fraudulent claims to Medicare between 2004 and 2009. He admitted to receiving more than $113,000 after falsifying the number and quality of x-rays provided to Medicare patients, according to the report.

Dr. Makki also pleaded guilty to falsifying an immigration form for one of his patients so that the patient would not need to meet naturalization requirements and also failed to report cash receipts on his 2002 and 2003 federal income tax returns, according to the report.

The guilty pleas were part of a broader settlement with the federal government resulting in Dr. Makki's forfeiture of $75,890 in cash and approximately $4 million in property.
