Las Vegas Internal Medicine Practice to Pay $300K to Settle Fraud Allegations

Las Vegas-based Emery Steckler Medical Institute, d/b/a Internal Medicine Associates, has agreed to pay $300,000 to resolve civil allegations of healthcare fraud, according to a Las Vegas Review Journal report.

The physician group allegedly billed Medicare and the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program for cholesterol tests that were medically unnecessary between Jan. 2003 and Dec. 2006, according to the report. The practice did not admit guilt as part of the settlement.

Three physicians who previously worked at the group also settled with the Justice Department to resolve the same allegations. Mark Handelman, MD, settled for $39,070; Glen Meyers, MD, settled for $13,341; and James Eels settled for $10,854, according to the report.
