Former Los Angeles Hospital Executive Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for Healthcare Fraud

Rudra Sabaratnam, MD, a former co-owner and CEO of City of Angels Medical Center in Los Angeles, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison and ordered to pay $4.1 million in restitution for his involvement in a healthcare fraud scheme, according to a Bloomberg Businessweek report.

In 2008, Dr. Sabaratnam pleaded guilty to paying recruiters to bring homeless people from Los Angeles homeless shelters to City of Angels for medical treatment, regardless of whether those individuals needed or requested treatment. City of Angels then billed Medicare and Medi-Cal for those services, many of which were not medically necessary.

In January, Dr. Sabaratnam and former City of Angels co-owner Robert Bourseau entered into a $10 million consent judgment to settle the allegations of violating the False Claims Act and Anti-Kickback Statute. Mr. Bourseau was sentenced to 37 months in prison in February.
