Chicago Weight Loss Physician Subject of FBI Manhunt for Fraudulent Billing

A Chicago-area physician known for his weight loss services is being sought by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for allegedly submitting false claims to payors and Illinois' Medicaid program, according to an FBI release.

Gautum Gupta, MD, is the owner and operator of the Nutrition Clinic, which has five locations in the Chicago metropolitan area. He has been charged with one count each of mail fraud, healthcare fraud and conspiracy. According to the release, Dr. Gupta is now the subject of a nationwide manhunt coordinated by the Chicago FBI.

The complaint alleges Dr. Gupta submitted claims to Blue Cross Blue Shield and the Illinois Medicaid program for unnecessary procedures or services that were never performed. From June 2001 to Jan. 2010, the Nutrition Clinic was paid nearly $25 million for claims submitted on behalf of patients.

If convicted of the charges, Dr. Gupta faces a sentence of up to 35 years in prison.
