According to a national public opinion poll commissioned by Research!America, only 18 percent of respondents believe that chronic pain is a major health problem whereas 50 percent believe that addiction to prescription painkillers is a major health problem.
The poll was conducted online in March 2013 by Zogby Analytics for Research!America. There were around 1,061 respondents.
Other significant findings of the poll are:
• Sixty percent said that chronic pain tends to be dismissed by doctors and the public.
• Fifty-four percent said that doctors are not discussing the possibility of developing dependence or addiction to pain medication enough with their patients.
• Fifty-two percent said doctors should have limits on the amount and dosage of pain medication they are allowed to prescribe.
• Only 4 percent said it's the responsibility of law enforcement to address the prescription drug abuse problem.
