Martin Schiavenato, PhD, RN, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar, has invented a machine to assess pain in premature infants and potentially protect them from its negative developmental effects, according to a press release from the foundation.
The machine translates behavioral and physiological signs of pain in infants into "real-time" visual displays of pain levels. The machine's display is a glass orb that changes color according to the subject's pain levels.
