Fishman said the condition has been around for years, but he finally gave it a name. He advises people to hold their phones at a 90 degree angle, which reduces stress on the neck, and has even developed an Android phone app that will alert users if they’re holding their phones at the wrong angle.

Fishman also said that permanent arthritic damage could be done by continuously flexing the neck like one does when hunched over a cell phone and texting.
