Autonomic Technologies in Redwood City, Calif., has created a device that uses technology based on research conducted at the Cleveland Clinic, which can help provide relief from migraines and cluster headaches, according to a Yahoo News report.
The device uses electrical stimulation technology that evolved out of Cleveland Clinic's research into deep-brain stimulation to treat Parkinson's disease. The Cleveland Clinic has recognized the technology as one of the top innovations for 2013. Frank Papay, MD, a facial doctor at the Cleveland Clinic, developed the surgical technique to implant the device into a group of nerves behind the nasal passage and eye sockets.
The company has approval to use the device to treat cluster headache patients in Europe. It has met with the FDA to discuss testing in the United States.
