Study: Spine cases safe in ASCs with efficient surgical teams, proper patient selection

With an efficient surgical team and careful patient selection criteria, single and multilevel cervical artificial disc replacement procedures are safe to perform in ASCs, according to a study authored by three renowned spine surgeons.

Todd Lanman, MD, Jason Cuellar, MD, PhD, and Alexandre Rasouli, MD, served as the principal investigators in the study, which was published Nov. 7 in Spine.

They analyzed 147 patients who underwent 231 consecutive cervical artificial disc replacement surgeries in ASCs over a nine-month period, including multilevel and revision procedures.

Three findings to know:

1. The average anesthesia duration was 88 minutes.

2. Just over 90 percent of patients were discharged directly home, while nearly 10 percent went to an after-care facility.

3. Of the 231 artificial disc replacements performed, there were two minor postoperative complications resulting in unplanned hospital admissions within 90 days.
