2 spine surgeons perform 1st endoscopic, robotic-guided surgery at Virginia Spine Institute

Reston-based Virginia Spine Institute recorded the world's first spinal surgery using combined endoscopic and robotic-guided technology.

Colin Haines, MD, and Christopher Good, MD, conducted the spine surgery. The two treated a patient diagnosed with isthmic spondylolisthesis and symptomatic stenosis. Drs. Haines and Good first performed a minimally invasive anterior lumbar fusion before performing the combined surgery.

Virginia Spine Institute utilized the joimax endoscope to perform a foraminotomy. Then, Dr. Haines and Good used the Mazor X robot guidance to stabilize the spondylolisthesis.

"Our research has shown that procedures performed with robotic guidance utilizing Mazor Core Technology improve safety for patients having spine surgery and decrease radiation to patients in the operating room," said Dr. Good. "We are proud to lead the next chapter of advancements that utilize technology and surgical skill to more efficiently facilitate spinal procedures."

Over the past 25 years, surgeons at Virginia Spine Institute have treated more than 85,000 patients.
