Mild COVID-19 case causes hearing loss for one woman

A woman lost hearing in one ear after having a mild COVID-19 infection, according to an Oct. 12 CNN report.

The woman experienced sudden ringing in her ear over the summer and later tested positive for COVID-19, the report said. She never felt sick, but an otologist told her the virus likely caused the damage.

Although there are no statistics on how common hearing loss is for COVID-19 patients, some studies suggest a link, the report said. Thirteen percent of COVID-19 patients in a Manchester, England, study reported hearing changes within two months of being discharged from the hospital. Another study of COVID-19 patients who died found two out of three had the virus in the middle ear and mastoid bone in the skull.

Matthew Stewart, MD, PhD, associate professor of otolaryngology at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine, told CNN COVID-19-releated hearing loss may be caused by blood clotting in the inner ear.
