Zimmer Biomet's stem-free shoulder system awarded FDA clearance — 4 insights

The FDA approved Zimmer Biomet's Sidus stem-free shoulder system.

Here's what you should know:

1. The Sidus system is a total shoulder arthroplasty solution for patients with good bone stock that have osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthrosis, focal avascular necrosis or for those who have had previous surgeries that don't compromise fixation.

2. The Sidus system restores a patient's anatomy while also preserving the existing bone stock. Both of those elements improve preoperative and postoperative outcomes.

3. After earning FDA approval, the company announced the Sidus system would be available in the U.S. during the first quarter of 2018.

4. Zimmer Biomet CEO Bryan Hanson said, "The FDA clearance of the Sidus stem-free shoulder system comes at a time when Zimmer Biomet is accelerating the pace of innovation. We launched Sidus in Europe in 2012 and initiated a clinical study in the U.S. in 2015. During that time, the product has demonstrated strong clinical performance. The addition of the Sidus system to Zimmer Biomet's U.S. portfolio reinforces the Company's leadership in the innovation of shoulder solutions."
