These 10 US university research programs are the most impactful

A study, published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, ranked the quality and quantity of research produced by university-based orthopedic surgery residency programs in the U.S.

A research team developed an objective methodology that assesses a residency program's ability to conduct meaningful research.

Researchers created a list of relevant articles utilizing Journal Citation Reports. In the JCR database there were 72 orthopedic journals. Researchers narrowed the list down by selecting journals with an Impact Factor over 0.95 and an Eigenfactor score above 0.00095, finding 45 eligible journals. Researchers then performed a Scopus search over a 10-year period to create a listing of relevant articles. Based on these databases, researchers named the most impactful programs.

These are the top 10 most impactful residency research programs:

1. Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School (Boston)
2. Hospital for Special Surgery/Weill Cornell Medical Center (New York City)
3. Washington University in St. Louis
4. Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.)
5. UPMC
6. Rush University Medical Center (Chicago)
